Bill Wells put together this trio as a vehicle to explore the jazz standard with a fresh creative impetus. Although the playing of the standard has almost become synonymous with a cliché for bad playing. It shouldn’t be the case, the thing about standards is that they are usually great tunes. For Le Weekend Bill has, however, decided to write a new set of instrumental pieces for the band and expanded it to four players, although keeping the trio name, much like Henry Threadgill’s sextet of seven. The ambient drone and lilting twist of melody will keep the festival buzzing throughout the weekend.
