Three Day Festival Pass

Commissioned in collaboration with the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, the idea for this new work by David Fennessy germinated from two areas. Frstly, the idea of the very rigid and symbolic gothic space of the Church of the Holy Rude, steeped as it is in local and weighty historic significance, and secondly, the challenge of creating a contemporary organ piece looking at new ways of harnessing the colossal power that can be created by the organ.

Fennessy worked closely with internationally respected organist Kevin Bowyer, considering how to combine the almost mystical sound that reverberates from the organ pipes with other instruments. The fact that the organ player and to some extent the organ itself are not seen in performance influenced his choice of working with two very different but individually dynamic percussionists. The contrast in musical attack between the organist and the percussion players will create a formidable soundworld, certainly one never experienced by the ancient stone of the Holy Rude.
