LW09 Bill Thompson's Shifting Currents

Devised and in collaboration with two other festivals, The Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival and sound in Aberdeen, this new commission looks at the very idea of place as part of its starting concept.

The Bates Mill in Huddersfield, The Fraserborough Lighthouse and The Church of the Holy Rude in Stirling share nothing in common except possibly their uniqueness.

Bill Thompson has taken field recordings from each location and has built a sound world, which will create the backbone for the three musicians to explore the shifting sonic environment.

Texas and painting are prevalent topics when discussing the musicians who will interpret Bill’s ideas. Bill is himself from Texas as is Rick Reed and both Rick and Keith Rowe began their careers as painters and in some ways the commission looks across the arts to create its unique soundscape.

There is not much new that can be said about Keith Rowe’s singular pursuit of his music from the moment he decided not to tune his guitar to his steady and wonderful development of his totally individual table top guitar electronics.

Expect splashes of sound as thick as Jackson Pollock’s drips.
